The HL7 Consolidated Clinical Document Architecture (C-CDA) is an XML-based markup standard that provides a library of CDA formatted documents. In the US, the C-CDA standards are used to transmit trillions of clinical documents every year. The C-CDA standard must be used to export medical data from all approved electronic health records in the United States. The C-CDA has references to terminology and a value set needed by US regulations, therefore even though the standard was initially established for the US, it has been used globally.
For information about C-CDA, please view guidance on this topic from the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC).
