The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law in the United States that protects the privacy of student education records. Enacted in 1974, FERPA grants parents certain rights regarding their children’s education records, such as the right to access and request amendments to these records. When a student turns 18 or enters a postsecondary institution, these rights transfer to the student, who then becomes an “eligible student”12.

FERPA also restricts the disclosure of personally identifiable information from education records without the consent of the parent or eligible student, with some exceptions2.
